The Portuguese club said United had “expressed interest” in paying the 39-year-old’s €10m (£8.3m) release clause as his contract expires in 2026.

Sporting said in a statement: “Manchester United FC has expressed interest in hiring coach Ruben Amorim, with Sporting’s board referring to the terms and conditions set out in the employment contract in force between the company and the coach, in particular the respective Termination clause and.” in the amount of €10,000,000.”

Ten Hag, 54, was informed on Monday morning that he had been sacked after two-and-a-half years as manager following a 2-1 defeat to West Ham United on Sunday.
A string of poor results, including 3-0 home defeats to Tottenham and Liverpool, marred the team’s start to this year’s Premier League season.

Ten Hag, who spent over £600m in transfer fees during his tenure, is United’s fifth manager in the 11 years since the retirement of club legend Sir Alex Ferguson.
Ten Hag signed a three-year contract with United in 2022, taking over from the club’s interim coach Ralf Rangnick following the departure of former coach and club legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
