David Warner caused a stir with his recent comments about the possibility of him coming out of retirement to cause a stir Australia again, but the former opening batsman’s wife Candice has said “it’s not happening”.
Earlier this month, 37-year-old Warner surprised the cricket fraternity and fans, saying he is ready to pick up his bat again to play against India, who will tour Australia for the five-Test Border Gavaskar Trophy starting November 22.
“I’m always available (Cricket Australia voters) and all I have to do is pick up the phone,” Warner had told News Corp. said.
Warner’s statement made sense to fans as Steve Smith is likely to drop to his usual fourth place against India and Cameron Green is recovering from a back injury that left a first place open. It brought Marcus Harris, Cameron Bancroft, Josh Inglis and youngster Sam Konstas into the picture for the opening Test in Perth.
Speaking to Fox Sports’ The Back Page, Candice Warner said her husband would not make a comeback even if he was still good enough to compete at international level.
“He’s very passionate about playing for Australia and I think if George Bailey, the selector, or Andrew McDonald, the coach, picked up the phone and said, ‘We need you’, he would get going straight away. (But) It’s definitely not happening,” Candice said.
“I think if he really didn’t think he was capable of doing that he wouldn’t have said that, but that’s no disrespect to the openers or people (in the fight for selection). If he had gone.” “If he had gone down that path he would have had to do it just like everyone else – play the Sheffield Shield and so on,” Mrs Warner added.
Warner retired from international cricket in July this year.
