Gary Lineker gives his verdict on Enzo Maresca and his start at Chelsea

Gary Lineker has reflected on Enzo Maresca’s first months in charge at Chelsea.

Enzo Maresca, 44, left Leicester City in the summer to become the new Chelsea manager.

The Italian head coach led Leicester to the league title last season, which gave him a big opportunity at Stamford Bridge.

Jason Cundy said on talkSPORT last week that Chelsea looked well-coached under Maresca. With the win over Newcastle United at the weekend, the team is currently in fifth place in the Premier League table.

Gary Lineker is super impressed with Enzo Maresca

Gary Lineker believes Maresca has made a great start in the Chelsea dugout. He particularly praised him for his clear thinking and ruthlessness in such a pressurized job.

“Maresca is doing a good job. We all looked at it and thought it was going to be really difficult to get in…” Lineker told The Rest Is Football.

“He has been in a bit of a turmoil at a club. Apparently the owners had arguments and stuff like that, but I think he handled it really well. He brings out the best. He seems to know what his team is. He seems to be ruthless enough to handle certain situations. I was very impressed, just like I was last season at Leicester.”

Record set by Enzo Maresca this season

So far, Maresca should be quite happy with his start at Chelsea.

There are definitely patterns of play emerging in the Blues team. He has also excelled at managing a competitive squad, rotating in league and cup competitions.

Here’s a look at Chelsea’s record under Maresca so far this season in all competitions:

Chelsea’s two previous full-time managers, Mauricio Pochettino and Graham Potter, each didn’t last more than a season. Hopefully the club has finally found someone in Maresca who can take on a long-term commitment.

We are definitely encouraged by the positive start to Maresca’s tenure as manager, but things can always change quickly with the next two league games against Manchester United (away) and Arsenal (home).

With the current player selection we are optimistic that Chelsea can finish in the top four, which would be a great first season under new management.
