Ishan Kishan has been away from the Indian team since the beginning of the year and was trolled on social media when he lost his BCCI contract as a central defender.
Wicketkeeper-batsman Ishan Kishan claimed that negativity on social media has become normal for him. With the advent of social media, we have seen several players getting unnecessary online hate, which Kishan believes people should not make a big fuss about and accept that it is not in their control. Kishan has been away from the Indian team since the beginning of the year and was trolled on social media when he lost his BCCI contract as a central defender.
Kishan was last part of the India squad during the 2023 South Africa tour, which he left midway through.
The batsman had reportedly taken a personal break, which did not go down well with the BCCI.
After the player decided to skip the domestic competitions ahead of the IPL, he was dropped from the main contract by the BCCI for prioritizing the cash-rich League E over domestic cricket.
The wicketkeeper-batter spoke about social media, saying that it has pros and cons and pointed out that negativity turns into praise when the player starts performing well.
“I feel like there will be negativity on social media. People will troll you if you don’t do well, and that’s completely normal. I think every athlete should accept that something like this will happen and you shouldn’t make a big deal about it.” I think you should like that too because at the end of the day you know that the same people will praise you too, when you perform,” Kishan told Times of India.
Kishan also cited the example of Hardik Pandya, who was heavily trolled during IPL 2024 after returning to Mumbai Indians as captain and faced hate from fans online, but was happy with his all-round performances in T20 World Cup rehabilitated.
“This happened with Hardik too. People trolled him too, but he just did his job, performed well at the World Cup and now you can see the result. So that’s how it should be… negativity will be there, but you’ve got it.” “Finding that neutral point so you can approach everything in a very athletic way,” he added.
“You can’t control social media”: Ishan Kishan
The swashbuckling batsman said that he also advises young cricketers not to take social media seriously and stay away from it.
“You can’t control social media. Jo bhi chalega…that’s fine. I think you don’t have to focus too much on these social media either. When I talk to younger people who are getting into big teams, I say it.” “The same goes for them: please try to stay away from social media,” he concluded.
